“Welcome to McMaster Urology Residency Program. McMaster Urology is a surgical program within McMaster University, Department of Surgery. McMaster Urology services can be found at McMaster Children’s Hospital, Juravinski Hospital and St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton.”
Our case mix spans the breadth of urology and includes minimally invasive and robotic surgery. We have a great group of faculty and energetic residents that function as a family and we pride ourselves in offering cutting edge clinical care.

“Welcome to McMaster Urology! Our training program serves a large area in Hamilton, covering four hospital in Hamilton, Ontario. We offer training in subspecialties : pediatric urology, urologic oncology, renal transplantation, male infertility, calculi, reconstructive surgery, and neurology. We also partner with community hospitals, such as Joseph Brant Hospital to expand surgical exposure as well.
McMaster Urology is a close-knit training program. The program faculty like to ensure that learners have early access to ORs, autonomy and support that makes our program unique.”
Urology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study of the genitourinary tract.
Research and clinical care involving urolithiasis, oncology, andrology, female urology, transplantation, reconstruction, pediatric urology, voiding dysfunction, erectile dysfunction, neurourology and trauma.
McMaster’s program is in Hamilton and its surrounding communities.
Our program’s strength is its surgical experience in a collegial environment. We are also a scholarly program that promotes high academic achievement and research.
Trainees in the McMaster Urology Residency Program can be expect early OR exposure from all aspects of urology from PGY 1. McMaster Urology not only focuses on early OR exposure but also the opportunity for trainees to pursue interests outside of the OR, urology to enhance their training experiences in residency.
Rotations
During the five years of residency residents will complete Surgical Foundations and Urology bootcamp, Urology, Nephrology, Vascular, ER, Trauma, ICU, General Surgery and more. The rotation schedule focuses on the Royal College mandatory rotations as well as the American Board rotations.
The last two years of residency focuses on urology rotations only. This allows residents to consider what specialty they enjoy the most and focus on their specialty they would like to explore as a career. More details on rotations can be found below.

Over 1,000 major urologic procedures are performed here at Canada’s busiest minimally invasive urologic center. There are usually at least four residents on service here at any time. This is also the site of our robotics program.

Comprehensive adult clinical services are offered at the Juravinski Hospital Associated with the Juravinski Cancer Center, major oncology operations are performed here. Our reconstructive urology and infertility services are also based here.

A full range of pediatric services is offered at McMaster Children’s Hospital.

Senior residents spend several months at the Burlington/Milton hospitals with exposure to advanced community urology experiences in open and laparoscopic urology.

About two-thirds of PGY 1 & 2 are spent off service on rotations such as Nephrology, ER, General Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, ICU, Trauma and Research.

Built into the McMaster Urology Residency Program is a dedicated academic schedule that also includes fun activities (Team building events, dinners, etc). Residents attend Urology Grand Rounds 7:30 – 8:30 am and Resident Leader Rounds on Friday 7:00am – 8:00am. Senior Residents attend Urology School on Wednesdays 1:00 – 4:00 pm and Junior residents attend Surgical Foundations 9:00 am – Noon on Wednesdays.

Residents are encouraged to participate in at least two research projects during their residency. Programmatic support by divisional research assistants, funding to attend conferences to present their research.
McMaster Urology boasts a stellar reputation for academic excellence and a deep alumni pool.
McMaster Urology provides early exposure to all aspects of Urology and provides trainees with opportunities to enhance their experience.
All faculty within the division participate in undergraduate and postgraduate surgical education and research.

The McMaster Urology residency program prides itself on the collegiality between faculty, residents, nurses and other allied health colleagues. From events such as Resident Retreats, annual brunches and AUA celebratory dinners to Welcome BBQ’s, the atmosphere of “Resident first” prevails in all activities in the Division of Urology.
